He came to America in 1930 to study in Nash- ville, TN until 1937. For lack of tuition, he was on his way home to Korea and stopped over in Los Angeles where he had joined Korean National Association to participate in the Ko- rean independence movement. He taught Japanese at Cal State University of Los Angeles. In 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army to be assigned in OSS (Office of Strategic Servic- es) and later dispatched to China to collaborate with zone 2 unit of Korean Liberation Army under Gen. Lee, Bum-suk to translate mili- tary info documents in Japanese, Chinese and English for Korean Provisional Government and Korean Liberation Army. Upon Korean liberation, he returned to America to be dis- charged from the U.S. Army. In 2001, the South Korean government posthumously recognized him with the Order of Merit of National Foundation / Patriotic People Award for his dedication for Korean independence movement.
